Mining in the Philippines (Update)

May 10, 2007 By: frbobscorner Category: Canadian Mining No Comments →

This is just a quick update* on what’s happening regarding the Canadian mining company wanting to come into the area where the Scarboro priest, Pat Kelly Lives. (near our Sister Parish) Here is a link to two letters that were published in the Prairie Messenger regarding the issue: Link Please note that there is an update on the web site that I mentioned before: www.insidemindanao.com My understanding from our sister parish (Sister Christine) is that the company has started to build a road into the area… certainly bad news, and that various pieces of equipment have been air-dropped into the area. The Sisters serving at our Sister Parish have not heard of any concerted effort being made (such as a petition or campaign coming out of an NGO like Development and Peace, etc.). Hopefully that’s coming… in the meantime, the first step, they believe, is to let the Canadian people know what a Canadian company is doing there.

The Harsh Realities of the Poor

President of Brazil and Pope greet one another at airport.

One woman who lives in poverty is convinced church leaders talk too much, and don’t do enough. This is one of the many sentiments the Pope will face in Brazil where there is a stark, painful, and glaring contrast between rich and poor people.‘TALK TOO MUCH’
A few miles away, 28-year-old Silvana de Jesus was cooking over a fire in a squatter camp where 12,000 people live in tents made of black plastic sheets.
“I think they talk too much and do too little,” the unemployed mother-of-five said of church leaders. “His visit doesn’t matter if they don’t change their posture with the poor. I myself didn’t even know he was coming.”

LIMBO? LET US HOPE NOT!

May 02, 2007 By: frbobscorner Category: Evangelization No Comments →

On Friday, April 20, 2007, the International Theological Commission (ITC), an advisory body comprised of 30 theologians from around the world chosen by the Pope, released its long-awaited document, The Hope of Salvation for Infants Who Die Without Being Baptized — the issue of original sin, baptism, salvation, and limbo. In essence the commission states that we have a right to hope that God will find a way to offer the grace of Christ to infants who have not been baptized.
If you would like to read more I suggest an interview with Sr. Sarah Butler. She is one of two women appointed to the International Theological Commission by John Paul II in 2004, and presently teaches dogmatic theology at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Dunwoodie, New York. The interview is rather long, and in my humble opinion, reflects the need for all of us to walk humbly with God – clinging to the Good Shepherd’s love.
